ONJUIN is the temple of ascetic practices for monks and continues to hold exorcism rites in the tradition of the Shochuzan denomination.For approximately 400 years,the chief priests of ONJUIN have transmitted these exercises to their successors,and presently the temple serves as a seminary for monks aspiring to receive the secret of these rites.

During the Edo Period,ONJUIN held ceremonies under decree from both the Imperial family and Tokugawa Shogunate.This eventually led to the development of an original onjuin ritual which continues to attract large followings to the present day.
